The Big Question....Lion or Tiger

There has always been a rivalry between lions and tigers. Many ask, “Which one is better?” To answer that, even though it’s often an opinionated question, we have to compare and contrast the two, scientifically. We’ll take the Siberian Tiger, and the African Lion.

The Siberian Tiger weighs up to 660 lbs. It’s a solitary hunter with eyesight 6 times sharper than a human. They have claws up to five inches long. Also, their teeth are 3 inches, and razor sharp. Tigers’ black stripes help them stay camouflaged in the rainforest in which they dwell.

Unlike the Siberian Tiger, the African Lion weighs up to 420 lbs. It lives in a pride, instead of solitude. The prides are dominated by a male lion, sometimes two. Its eyesight is only five times better than a human, although their claws are roughly an eighth of an inch longer than the Siberian Tiger. The African Lions’ teeth are also an inch longer.

The Siberian Tiger and the African Lion are also very similar. They both have retractable claws. In addition, they have long tails which are used for balance. Plus, they both have amazing hearing, with the ability to hear noises up to a mile away.

Even though the lion and tiger are close in size, the tiger always wins. There are many accounts in which a tiger killed a lion. The tigers have clear advantages, and a clearer sense of how to kill efficiently, and without harming themselves.

The Peacock

This bright blue bird with green tail feathers is from Asia. They use thier tail, with the many eye spots to attract females and it's sometimes thought that they use it for defense. These gorgeous bird live on the ground mainly, but roost in the trees at night to protect themselves from predators. Males are the only one's who have the tails, as females are a more dull brown color. Both however have the crests on thier heads.
The call of a peacock can be heard from many miles away. The calls or usually from the males, who use these as a way of protecting themselves, their territory, and once again to attract females.

The Elephant

The Elephant is the largest land animal on the planet. They can be up to 13 feet tall and 11,000 pounds. What most people don't know about elephants is that there isn't just two species. People think that there are only two species, the African and the Asian. There are a lot more than that. They are the most recognized though. The elephant can eat up to half it's body weight in one day. They also drink a lot too. The African Elephant lives on the Savannah where water is scarce, so they travel great distances to get water. The Asian elephant lives in just about all parts of Asia, and they don't have to worry about water. They worry about the Tiger, the world's largest cat. Both of them are led by Matriarchs, the oldest females, who have the responsibility look after the whole herd.(The African is on the right, and the Asian is on the left.)

Wolves

The Wolf. It is an amazing creature. The wolf lives in the northern hemisphere, ranging from Utah to Canada, and all over Europe and in some parts of Asia. These dogs are large, around the size of a Belgian Malamute. They are really tough, standing near freezing temperature. Their prey is always on the move because they eat Caribou and deer. Even though they live up north, there are Mexican Grey Wolves which are near Mexico, but more in Arizona.

This is really cool: When I was up north in Prescott, there on Gurley Street is alleys and shop, well down one alley with shops in it, there was a store that had a dog,(We brought our little dog) that was watching ours. I thought it looked like a Wolf so I asked. It was a Wolf. When you see them they are really cool.

Lions

Lions are the second largest cats in the world. They live in Africa and  their prides are around 15-40 strong. The males are the protecter of the territories. They are the ones that protect the lionesses and the cubs. The females are the main hunters along with any cubs that are old enough to hunt. They are capable of taking down an elephant, and have no trouble with anything smaller. There territories are essential because they need land rich in food and water to support such large groups. When they hunt one or more lions scare the prey towards the waiting lions that are hiding nearby. Even though the females are the hunters, the males usually gets the largest share in the meal.

Rhinoceros

The Rhinoceros is a really big animal. They can weigh around 4,000 lbs. There are five different kinds of rhinoceros's, and the one's that most people know about are the Black Rhinoceros, and the White Rhinoceros. The funny thing is , they are both grey.

These large animals are herbivores eating a variety if plants.Their home range is Africa and some parts of Asia. The rhino is a specialized animal, that has bad sight, but really good sense of smell. Because they are aggressive, if you want to see one in the wild, you have to be down wind, as they can smell you if you are anywhere else.(This is a Black Rhinoceros pictured above.)

The Ostrich

When you first look at an ostrich they look really funny.A large bird with little wings and big legs. The legs on the ostrich are so strong they can kick a lions head clean off. This is the last bird you want to tangle with.

Having such great legs, the ostrich can run at speeds of forty-five miles per hour for a good distance. Even though this big bird looks as though it will eat you in one bite, the ostrich is actually and herbivore. They are like true birds that eat plants and seeds along with the occasional bug.  The babies just look so darn cute though, but that is the last thing you want to touch. That is like insulting a person allergic to strawberries, a strawberry shortcake. They take the role of parenting very seriously.

Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

The Western Diamondback is one of the largest rattlesnakes in the United States. It is also one of the most venomous rattlesnakes. When people think of snakes they run in the other direction and want to kill it. This rattlesnake is more shy and isn't as aggressive as the Mohave Rattlesnake. Still, when you see one it comes as a great surprise.

The Greater Kudu; A Species of Antelope

The Greater Kudu ( tragelaphus strepsiceros) lives in Africa and has a range extending from the east in Tanzania and Kenya into the south states of Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botzwana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. They have also been introduced in small numbers in New Mexico, USA. They enjoy the cover of shrubs and are always near water. They are most active in the evenings and mornings, and eat many types of grasses, leaves, and roots. They have been known to travel long distances in search of food and water.
Any carnivorous animal will take the Kudu as breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Kudu's aren't fast enough to escape chasing so they use brush for cover.
Kudu's usually have one calf, which is hidden from predators for the first two weeks, but later the calf ventures out on its own and will roam with the rest of the herd during the day.
Kudu's can live up to 20 years in captivity.

The Giraffe!

The Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardis) is the tallest of the land animals. The giraffe is a unique animal. Originally there are nine types, but the most well-known are: Angolan, Cape, Maasai, Reticulated, Rothschilds, and the West African giraffe.
Giraffes never intermix in the wild because their territories are separate from each other.
The giraffe's superb eyesight and hearing enable them to spot predators and communicate to each other easily. Their hooves can kick a lions' head clean off, but they can't pick up their feet very far off the ground.
When eating, the giraffe's long legs and long neck help them reach the best foliage at the top of the tree. But, they have to time it right and eat quickly because once they start eating, the Acacia tree sends a chemical odor to all other surrounding trees to put a foul tasting liquid into their sap that lasts for around 30 minutes. Like camels, giraffes can go for weeks without water.
The giraffe is one of my favorite animals because they are so elegant and refined, and they act civilized in an animal-sort-of way.

The Bengal Tiger

The Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is about 10 feet long and can weigh up to 500 pounds. It lives in isolated groups across woodland, open forest, and orchard brush, but is mostly found in the mangrove swamps of the Sunderbans Region in Bangledesh, and the northeastern state of West Bengal.

Bengal Tigers eat anything from pigs, deer, antelope, and buffalo to crocodiles and humans. Tigers are aggressive hunters and sometimes kill more than they need. They are solitary hunters, and their canine teeth are used to stab and kill prey. Their teeth can grow to 3 inches in length and can crunch through the backbone of any animal.

Bengal Tigers kill by stealth and ambush and with its huge fangs, razor-sharp claws, powerful muscles and massive build, it can knock down and kill in seconds animals much larger than itself.

Tigers' vision is 6 times better than humans. Hearing is their best sense. White spots, called flashes, on the backs of its ears are used to show aggresion or to identify others in the dark. Their roars can be heard from two miles away and their stripes are as unique as fingerprints.
